Back On Line
Of course it's been far too long, and band websites should be updated all of the time, but we have been busy. It's now July and we are approaching our first birthday. I have updated the list of shows, now over 70 performances at different venues in Jakarta, and a much expanded song list, thanks to requests and our band member's creativity. We are approaching a very busy August, so it's time to keep the story going here, for anyone who wants to read it.
More importantly. come and meet us at the Jaya Pub every Sunday or at our published shows around the great music pubs of town. We are particularly excited to play every Wednesday during August and September at Motion Blue at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta's premier jazz and blues sound space.
Doing the rounds of Jakarta's best live music pubs
We love our home base of Jaya Pub and will be their Sundays but.....our goal in February and March was to take Jaya Blues to the best live music pubs in Jakarta, and we have managed to book Star Deli on Saturday 16th February, performing after visiting US band Lolita.
We will play Eastern Promise on Friday 1st March and McGettigan's on Saturday 2nd March.
This is all about working with these venues to promote live music in Jakarta for the benefit of all - public, venues and musicians. We want to work with venues in partnership to find a formula that sustains and grows live music. We want you to experience the live sound of the songs we play, share our passion for classic songs and connect with the roots of modern music. Some will dance, some will talk, some will sit and absorb - as long as you enjoy. We know we will enjoy.
Jaya Blues lights up Motion Blue, Jan 18 & 19
With a dream sound system and sophisticated décor, Motion Blue offered us a chance to play to a wider audience and record our shows. We varied the format on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday was more laid back and bluesy; Saturday was a funky party. Thanks to the Motion Blue team, Jessica and Kiki, for two great nights and thanks to our wonderful guests. Here are three of the songs we belted out for them.
Dolf Wemay joins Jaya Blues
We are happy to announce that one of the legends of Indonesian live music, Dolf Wemay has joined Jaya Blues as our bassist and additional vocalist. Dolf has toured internationally with the Tantowi Yahya Country Band, released his solo album Untuk Selamanya in 1987 and has taken his own Jakarta River Blues Band on the road since 2011. Born in The Netherlands from Indonesian heritage, Dolf returned to Indonesia as an adult. He performed on Country Road and Bluesnight on TVRI programs and continues to be a mentor to aspiring musicians. Dolf has one of the best blues and soul voices around, reviving some of our favourite songs for audiences and band members to enjoy. His versions of Tore Down and Presence of the Lord are not to be missed.
Good "Craic" at Molly's
Thanks to Trevor for the chance to play at this great live music venue. We were celebrating with Lucia and friends, plus a great group of Lea's gang, including my good friend Ivan Nestorman. Ivan is one of Indonesia's great voices and song writers. I had the pleasure of performing with him in Atambua in 2015 to draw attention to human trafficking of women and girls from the area. His band includes strings and flute, which combines with atmospheric vocals to bring the emotion and musical heritage of the Eastern islands.
We played a mix of blues, soul and party hits, including our own version of Whiskey in the Jar. Thanks to DJ Dion for warming up the crowd in the breaks. The party continued until well after 1am with us on the dance floor with our guests. Can't wait to get back.
Shun Kikuta "The Shogun of Blues"
With Jaya Blues, NGG-BH Band and Electric Cadillac
Sunday 2 December 2018 - Jaya Pub, Jakarta
A feast of blues, led by the Band Leader of Koko Taylor and BB King. Thanks to Toshi, Chick and Kongko for linking up with Shun and thanks to Shun for including us in his Asian tour. The Jaya was pumping, the dance floor was full, and the three bands and various guest stars moved on and off the stage mixing it up in the best way possible.
It was an honour for us to have Shun as our first international guest. Now back in Japan after over 25 years playing blues in Chicago, Shun shared with us his talent and his stories. This was what we hoped for when we started Jaya Blues and Shun, you are now part of our story - thank you!!
More great shots in the Photos section, thanks to Jose Botak @extrajose_.
Lea and Steve Bring New Soul to the Jaya Blues
Baby Incredible has arrived - Noah was born on 1st November and is a star. Steve and Lea have stepped wonderfully into the band, bringing their own showmanship and vocals to keep Sundays at the Jaya growing, while I step back to enjoy family time and focus on my day job! Along with others, I will still join the Jaya Blues when I can, linking up with Steve and Lea like I did last night with my good friend and former band mate Jeff from Australia - who took to the Jaya stage for the first time with his harmonica for some Mojo and Walking Blues.
The sound is getting tighter and our range of songs is demonstrating the breadth of influence we draw from, based on a solid blues base. We are now exploring different venues and different audiences, and playing with different musicians, all part of learning and growing our band.
